My husband and I strongly believe in paying back for our many blessings by making $100,000 donations to those educational institutions which so benefited us in our formative years. Financially, we did this by donating highly appreciated stock to charitable remainder unitrusts (CRUT) for each such educational institution.

Under CRUTs, Sally and I receive annual income (5% of the trust principal) for life; and upon our demise, the trust principal belongs to Colby-Sawyer. CRUTs are a win/win for both donor and school.
