Scholarship Funded Now, with More Later

In 2004, Nancy Hoyt Langbein ’56 and her husband, Ed, decided to downsize, selling their home for what they described as a “modest nest egg.” Following the sale, they began considering gift options with a focus on net income.
“We were attracted to the joint charitable gift annuity proposals that Colby-Sawyer College provides, which offer a fixed return (part of which is tax exempt) and an immediate charitable income-tax deduction,” said Nancy.
A joint charitable gift annuity also afforded Nancy and Ed another option that they had been thinking about—their wish to establish a scholarship at Colby-Sawyer to reflect Nancy’s appreciation for the wonderful college experience that she enjoyed. “We wanted to give other students an opportunity to experience all that Colby-Sawyer has to offer them,” Nancy said.
Making a gift to Colby-Sawyer through a joint charitable gift annuity allowed Nancy and Ed to realize that wish. “Supported by our gifts to the Colby-Sawyer Fund, it was possible to immediately set up a scholarship,” Nancy said.
Establishing a scholarship also meant reconnecting with the college on a whole new level. “We’ve really enjoyed getting to regularly meet the scholarship recipients,” said Ed, “including our current recipient, who is a student from the class of 2017 from our home state of Maine.”
